Composite poles are usually manufactured using a filament winding process. They are used in various applications including street lighting, solar energy collection or power transmission. End user desired features include resistance to impact and variable wind speeds, weatherability, UV resistance, and fire retardancy and color choice and/or design options.

(Case Study) China is hit by typhoons every summer, normally affecting its eastern and southern regions. In 2014, a subsidiary of the China Southern Power Grid Company embarked on rebuilding power transmission utility poles along 20 kilometers of coastline exposed to grade 12 and grade 13 typhoons. 80 percent lighter yet 4 times stronger than steel reinforced concrete poles, the new composite poles have a service life of up to 80 years.
